The 9/11 Tragedy

On September 11, thousands of people were victims of the most horrific act of terrorism in America. Their lives and their promise were taken from them. Juliana was one of the youngest victims.

They were best friends, close as sisters, and they were headed to California. Paige Farley-Hackel, Juliana's godmother and Ruth McCourt, Juliana's mom were going to fly from Boston together on United Airlines Flight 175, but when Paige Farley-Hackel realized she could use frequent flyer miles, she got a ticket for American Airlines Flight 11 instead. The McCourt's said goodbye in the early morning hours at Logan International Airport in Boston on September 11th and boarded their planes.

The two women planned on meeting in Los Angeles to take Juliana to Disneyland. Farley-Hackel's plane was hijacked and struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The McCourt's flight, hijacked as well, crashed into the South Tower shortly thereafter.

Why the fund was created

DAVID MCCOURT RECALLS HIS DAUGHTER JULIANA'S SPIRIT IN TELLING THIS STORY:
It was a crisp Saturday afternoon, I was diligently reviewing paperwork in my peaceful Connecticut home. Suddenly, our dog Pheobe, a breed similar to a terrier, started yapping and yapping… barking away, disrupting my concentration. "SHUT UP Pheobe!" I shouted. Instantly, little Juliana put her hands on her hips and said, " Daddy, don't say that! When you say 'shut up' you hurt her feelings and you hurt my feelings." When I explained to her that I was trying to get some work done, and I needed the dog to be quiet, Juliana replied that it wasn't the way to do it. "Here daddy, let me show you." She said. Juliana went over to the little white fluffy dog, bent down, and with her little fingers cupped together gently started to pet Pheobe's head. "It's ok Phoebe… we're here. Everything will be ok. We love you Phoebe" … and the dog stopped barking, and looked back at little Juliana with loving eyes as to say, "thank you." "See daddy? … that's all you have to do."
Juliana was an extraordinary example of a person
who displayed sensitivity to everyone's feelings.

"This gift was a manifestation of her mother Ruth's spirituality. If we can pass that gift on, to create more harmony amongst children, future generations will be more compassionate. Juliana will have given the greatest spiritual gift."
David McCourt.
