   Programs

The Juliana Valentine McCourt Children's Education Fund takes pride in selecting programs that are well structured and have proven results. Programs for 2002/2003 that were selected are the Mentoring USA "BRAVE Juliana" Program, and Operation Respect CT "Don't Laugh At Me!"

   Initiatives

The United States Senate has named The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network the lead organization to coordinate local and national volunteer activities in memory of those killed.

Unity in the Spirit of America (USA) Act. Co-authored by Senator Stabenow and Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and co-sponsored by 16 additional Senators, the USA Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on January 10, 2002 as an amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill. The Points of Light Foundation have been given the honor and responsibility of carrying out this national initiative, in order to help create a sense of healing and unity across the United States.

Volunteer projects must be registered between June 1, 2002 and September 11, 2002, and largely completed by December 31, 2002.

   BRAVE JULIANA Program 2002 2003

As a tribute to the spirit of Juliana Valentine McCourt and the other victims of the tragic events of September 11, BRAVE JULIANA will build upon the foundation of Mentoring USA's BRAVE pilot program by expanding and improving the program in several important ways:
  • Will include a new intensive training component in Cultural Diversity for every mentor prior to their mentoring program starting in 2002/2003
  • BRAVE JULIANA materials will be updated and will form a stand alone section of the mentor handbook, which is distributed and reviewed with all mentors during their training.
  • Each mentoring site will benefit from two on-site seminars each year, led by outside facilitators.
  • Program Managers will meet twice a year with mentors and site coordinators to provide continuing education
The effectiveness will be measure through pre and post evaluations for all diversity trainings, mentors, and mentees. Then the program managers will provide written summaries of thefeedback received during the 'Continuing Education sessions with mentors and site coordinators.
